Running Marathons

Running Marathons is a popular sport. Even kids are getting involved with running them. To show how it has grown, in 2008 there were around 400,000 marathon runners in the country who crossed the finish line. The following year, 2009, there were almost half a million runners.

The marathon appeals to athletes and also to regular 'folks' who are looking for a goal to get in shape or for a challenge. It certainly is not difficult to find Marathons to run in. There is one just about every week hosted by numerous countries.

There Have Been Cheaters

Most runners actually do run the miles, but there have been cheaters. In the Boston Marathon, years ago, one runner tried to cheat. She was the winner, until it was discovered that she actually rode the subway for large section of the race. Frustrated, organizers wanted to be certain that cheating wouldn't happen again.

Now, the participants are given a computer chip to attach to their shoes that record when they actually cross the start line and when they cross the finish line, plus the distance traveled.  Running barefoot is becoming a more widespread option and then the chip should be tied around you ankle, since there are no shoes to secure it.

Train With Friends

Do not just show up at a race without any prior training. You could hurt yourself if your body is not used to running. Long distance runners practice running shorter distances first, and then work up to the longer ones.

There is more to running a marathon then just running. It's important to eat well and drink a lot of fluids. If you run hard one day, give yourself rest and recovery days too. During the run, be sure to continue to stay hydrated.

Marathons may not be for everyone, but they can be a goal that is reachable for just about anyone. If you do participate, wouldn't be a bad idea to find like minded friends to train with. You can encourage each other and cheer each other on.
