Why Stretching?
Why should you stretch? Did you know it's one of the best ways to keep nimble at any age? Stretching is one of the best ways to maintain a healthy body. Diet and exercise are important pillars for your well-being, but it's easy to overlook the importance of stretching.
Without stretching, your muscles tighten and are more easily injured with overuse or accidents. Did you know that stretching could actually help your body heal itself?
At the health club, I met a woman who told me that she credited stretching as the catalyst that helped her walk again. She had been in a wheelchair for a number of years then learned about the benefits of stretching. Through consistent stretching, she gained the use of her legs back.
She commented to me that everyone should add stretching to his or her routines. She said it was so healthy and easy to do. Stretching lengthens your body and helps you with your flexibility and posture. I've met a number of people that have had amazing result from regular stretching.
How To Stretch
Have you noticed how animals, like cats and dogs, always stretch after a nap or when they wake up? Stretching in the mornings is a good way to wake up. Even just reaching up as high as you can, then trying to touch your toes is a good way to start the day.
Live the animal kingdom. Stretching is something that we can do unconsciously. For example, if you’ve been sitting for a long time, it’s quite natural to stretch. I often set a timer to remember to take stretching breaks if I’m at the computer for too long.
Here is a list of stretching ideas:
- Breath slowly and deeply for each stretch.
- Don't bounce while you stretch.
- Stretch slowly.
- Stretch to your maximum, but respect your limits.
- Get a stretching routine, use a stretching video.
- Hold each stretch for at least 20 seconds.
- Stretch for about 20 minutes at the end of the day.
We use stretching videos and do it with friends. Everyone who has joined us notices how deep your sleep is after stretching. Actually we walk first, and then stretch.
It may be hard to stretch everyday, but do try to stretch several times a week. It’s good to stretch after your muscles are warmed up. You might try, like we do, walking a bit first, then stretching at the end.
