Run Barefoot or With Shoes

Is it really better to run barefoot? This hub will look at the difference between running with shoes and running barefoot. Running barefoot is becoming a more popular trend these days.

Good Running Form

In my running years, we were told that hitting the heal first and rolling into the run cushioned the impact. These videos are proving the opposite. It's actually better to strike the front part of your foot to the ground rather than the heel.

What I had been taught, as a runner, was to land on your heel first, then roll into the running motion. Now there is evidence out that hitting your heel can be jarring to your joints. I remember well the knee problems and bouts of shin splints.

Now, a better running technique is to land on the ball of your foot. As you can see in the video, it’s a very different running gait. If you run with or without shoes, it may be wise to imitate this style of running.

Running Barefoot

Here’s an interesting video put out by the New York Times. In this video they talk about a 5 finger shoe by Vibram. Apparently, it’s quite close to actually running barefoot. It allows your toes to act separately which will help in balance.

(note… put Amazon links next to the above article too. Make the videos full width.)

Some Pros and Cons for Running Barefoot

What’s good about running barefoot? You can save a lot of money by not needing to buy expensive running shoes! You won’t get as many injuries, although if you run landing on the forefront of your foot that should also help with less injuries. And, imagine the convenience of being able to run anywhere without needing to have your running shoes with you. Just take off your shoes and you are ready to run.

What’s not so good about running barefoot? You are more exposed to bacteria and germs that can get tracked into the house. We personally leave our shoes at the front door. It also takes a while to get used to and will leave your feet pretty calloused.

Running barefoot may not be for everyone, but how you run may make a difference for anyone who runs.
